Coffee with Karan: Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan successfully revived Bobby Deol’s career, while Sunny Deol was unable to do so

Sunny Deol might be an exception in today’s world of celebrity. He only does one movie a year, has no six-pack abs, and doesn’t do endorsements. Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan successfully revived Bobby Deol’s career. In Gadar 2, he managed to deliver a blockbuster despite working outside of the system. But the same cannot be said of his brother Bobby Deol. In many respects, Bobby’s celebrity is the opposite of his older brother’s.

It is quite admirable that Sunny chose to postpone his prime career in order to help Bobby make his debut in the 1990s. As a producer, Sunny persevered through obstacles such as the actor’s leg injury sustained on the sets of Barsaat (1995), Bobby’s launch vehicle, and changes in the director. Bobby went on to collaborate with Sunny’s hitmakers, Rahul Rawail and Anil Sharma, following his triumphant debut.

Bobby was cast by Sunny in his dream project, 23rd March 1931: Shaheed (2002), even sacrificing his desire to play Bhagat Singh. Sunny had previously cast Bobby in his directorial debut, Dillagi (1999). Sunny attempted to revive Bobby’s career through Apne (2007), Chamku (2008), and the Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise following a string of failures. However, Bobby was unable to establish himself in these films without the help of his brother and illustrious father, Dharmendra.

Bobby Deol has famously talked about how he gave up on his career in the late 2000s, and even succumbed to serial drinking. On his recent appearance on Koffee with Karan Season 8, Bobby confessed that he sat jobless for months, till he realised he has to stand on his own two feet, and his family can help him only this far.

In actuality, Lord Bobby’s comeback rests on three pillars: body building, optics, and brand building, in addition to his own perseverance. It’s interesting to note that Sunny hates all three of these aspects of celebrity. Even though he took his time, he succeeded once more without the assistance of these three instruments.

When asked in the Rapid Fire round what he doesn’t like about his Darr co-star Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny said that he turned actors into commodities. One can gauge the actor’s frustration as he had a tough time adapting to the corporate/multiplex culture in the early 2000s, something that Shah Rukh championed, and in many ways, pioneered.

However, Shah Rukh was able to use his enormous brand and his ability to grow and sustain it to create a studio that helped actors like Bobby Deol, Amrita Rao, Zayed Khan, Sushmita Sen, Deepika Padukone, Ali Fazal, Abhay Chopra, Hardik Mehta, Shanker Raman, Jasmeet K Reen, and Bobby Deol himself launch and relaunch their careers.

Bobby himself admitted on Koffee with Karan that while directors like host Karan Johar didn’t offer him work when he approached them, Shah Rukh’s production house Red Chillies Entertainment has always been generous with him through streaming projects like Class of ’83 (2020), Love Hostel (2022), and Stardom, the upcoming directorial debut of his son Aryan Khan.

Second, Sunny responded that Salman Khan sends everyone to the gym when asked what he dislikes about the actor. Although a novice might be sidetracked from their primary task, Bobby has benefited greatly from Salman’s guidance. Bobby has proven himself to be a thirst trap that never stops, starting with his shirtless appearance alongside Salman in Remo D’Souza’s Race 3 (2018) and continuing with his bare-chested pose in the final frame of the teaser for Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal.

And finally, Sunny expressed his reservations against Akshay Kumar doing too many films. Yet again, this approach has worked greatly in Bobby’s favour. From doling out three seasons of Prakash Jha’s Aashram to now branching into the South film industry with Kanguva (Tamil) and Hari Hara Veera Mallu (Telugu), Bobby is making sure he’s everywhere. It started with his turn in Housefull 4, a franchise Akshay has made successful with his ability to juggle several projects.

Sunny’s level of fame is undeniable because he demonstrated his abilities with a huge hit. However, considering that the Gadar 2 star has witnessed his own journey down that road to self-discovery, one can reasonably expect him to take no other route to the same road.
