The SAG Awards in 2023 are venturing into uncharted waters. The 29th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will no longer be televised on TBS and TNT after 25 years; instead, they will be broadcast on Netflix’s YouTube channel. If you’re wondering how you’ll be able to watch to find out which of your favourite SAG nominees wins, do not worry. To make sure you don’t miss Angela Bassett doing the thing, we’re breaking down what you need to know.
When Are the SAG Awards in 2023?
On Sunday, February 26, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, the 29th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be presented. The Fairmont Century Plaza will host the ceremony. The event will take place without a host, just like it did the previous three years.
How to Watch the SAG Awards in 2023
The hard part comes at this point. The 2024 SAG Awards will be broadcast live on Netflix, according to a collaboration the SAGs announced earlier this year. The 2023 SAG Awards will instead be broadcast on Netflix’s official YouTube channel because it is rumored that the company is still developing its live streaming technology. Facebook and Twitter users will be able to follow the ceremony.
When the agreement was revealed, Netflix Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria remarked, “The SAG Awards are revered by the creative community and viewers alike, and now even more fans around the world will be able to celebrate these great actors.” We look forward to working with SAG-AFTRA to elevate and grow this extraordinary ceremony as a global live event in 2024 and the years to come as we start to investigate live broadcasting on Netflix.
Who Is Nominated? Who Is Attending?
The SAG candidates for this year differ noticeably from the Oscar nominees in a few key aspects. Together with Ana de Armas from Blonde, Cate Blanchett from Tár, and Michelle Yeoh from Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Oscar-rejected Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis made the SAG best-actress cut. Together with Oscar candidates Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, Bill Nighy, and Adam Sandler, the comedic actor received a nod for best actor for his portrayal of a basketball player in Hustle.
Paul Dano is competing in the supporting-actor category alongside his Oscar-nominated Fabelmans co-star Judd Hirsch, Brendan Gleeson from Banshees of Inisherin, Barry Keoghan, who recently won a BAFTA, Ke Huy Quan from Everything Everywhere All at Once, and surprise nominee Eddie Redmayne for The Good Nurse. The SAG nominees for best supporting actress, which include Angela Bassett, Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, Stephanie Hsu, and Jamie Lee Curtis, exactly match the Oscar nominees in this category.
The SAG Awards honour outstanding achievement in television. Adam Scott of Severance will compete for the award for best male actor in a drama series against Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Jeff Bridges, The Old Man, and Jason Bateman of Ozark. Speaking of Ozark, Jennifer Coolidge from The White Lotus, Elizabeth Debicki from The Crown, and Zendaya from Euphoria are also up for awards. Julia Garner and Laura Linney are also nominated. Quinta Brunson of Abbott Elementary, Amanda Seyfried of The Dropout, and Jeremy Allen White of The Bear are among the other TV actors nominated.
Paul Mescal, an Oscar contender who was not nominated for a SAG award, will present during the presentation. He will be joined by a distinguished group that includes Jenna Ortega from Wednesday, Aubrey Plaza from White Lotus, and Andrew Garfield from Under the Banner of Heaven, who will present Sally Field with the SAG lifetime achievement award.
Furthermore attending will be Don Cheadle from White Noise, Rooney Mara from Women Talking, Gabriel LaBelle from The Fabelmans, and Jessica Chastain, who won the SAG award for best actress last year and is nominated for George & Tammy in 2023. Ariana DeBose, who won best supporting actress at the SAG Awards the year before, won’t be performing an original rap there, but she will be there to honour this year’s exceptional performances.
