With a record-breaking seventh World Cup century on Wednesday, India’s captain Rohit Sharma passed fellow countryman Sachin Tendulkar to lead India to a thrashing eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan. The hosts, who were chasing 273 for victory in New Delhi, rode on Rohit’s 131 to reach their mark in 35 overs for a second straight victory in the championship 50-over match. Rohit Sharma record century led to victory by eight wickets, He broke Tendulkar’s mark of six tonnes in World Cups with his century off 63 balls, which caused the virtually full audience to stand.

“I am aware that it is my duty to start the team out strong and to position the team as favourably as I can. I enjoy doing it and have been doing it for a while.
In addition, Rohit’s century was the quickest by an Indian in a World Cup, surpassing Kapil Dev’s century against Zimbabwe in 1983, which came off just 72 balls.
As Rohit passed Chris Gayle’s record of 553 sixes across all international formats and surpassed 1,000 World Cup runs, he smashed the ball to every part of the ground.
Before being dismissed by leg-spinner Rashid Khan, the brash opener had struck 84 balls and hammered 16 fours and five sixes during his innings.
After a strong bowling performance on a batting-friendly wicket, his opening partnership of 156 runs with the left-handed Ishan Kishan, who scored 47, increased the team’s domination.
Happy homecoming for Kohli
Virat Kohli, a cricketing superstar who was born in Delhi, quickly grabbed control and batted an undefeated 55 before finishing the game with a boundary.
At the other end, Kohli had Shreyas Iyer for company. Iyer made 25 runs without being out and smashed the highest six of 101 metres in the tournament thus far.
The team contains players, according to Rohit, “who can play fearless cricket”.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, on 21, and Rahmat Shah, on 16, fell in the space of four balls with Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur taking the wickets.
Left-handed batsmen Shahidi and Umarzai rebuilt the innings with a century partnership, prompting Rohit to rotate his bowlers.
Umarzai completed his second ODI half-century and soon Shahidi completed his half-century by hitting Pandya for a four and followed it up with a six.
Umarzai, who hit two fours and four sixes in his 69-ball innings, also attacked but was bowled by Pandya.
Shahidi continued the attack with regular fours but was LBW to Kuldeep Yadav while attempting to reverse sweep the left-arm wrist spinner.
To stop Afghanistan on a wicket full of runs, Bumrah along with Rashid struck twice.
“We have seven more games, we are looking forward to those games,” Shahidi said. “Hopefully we’ll learn from our mistakes and work on it.”
