The lineup for the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023 was revealed on Monday, and it includes notable films including Anurag Kashayp’s Kennedy, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Monster, Bradley Cooper’s Oscar-baiting Maestro, and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning Anatomy of a Fall.
Over 250 films will be shown during the festival, which takes place from October 27 to November 5, with a focus on modern filmmaking and fresh South Asian voices in cinema.
The event features approximately 40 global premieres, 45 Asia premieres, 70 South Asia premieres, and 13 divisions, according to the organisers.
The impressive World Cinema lineup of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival also includes Perfect Days by Wim Wenders, Beyond Utopia by Madeleine Gavin, The Daughters of Fire by Pedro Costa, In Our Day by Hong Sang-soo, Strange Way of Life by Pedro Almodóvar, The Old Oak by Ken Loach, Fallen Leaves by Aki Kaurismäki, and La Chimaera by Alice Rohrwacher.
Kennedy, a crime thriller by Tahira Kashyap, will be shown in the Gala Premier South Asia segment alongside Rajat Kapoor’s Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa and Tahira Kashyap’s Sharmajee ki Beti.
The South Asia Competition includes films including Mithya by Sumant Bhat, Barir Naam Shahana (A House Named Shahana) by Leesa Gazi, and The Red Suitcase by Fidel Devkota.
All India Rank by Varun Grover, Pushtaini by Vinod Rawat, Stolen by Karan Tejpal, and Mai by Milin Dhamade are some of the titles in the Focus South Asia (Non-Non-Competition) division.
Indi(r)a’s Emergency by Vikramaditya Motwane, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam by Anand Patwardhan, Paradise by Prasanna Vithanage, and Something Like an Autobiography by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki are among the titles in the Icons South Asia schedule.
The restored version of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy, which celebrates 20 years since its release in November, will be shown in a special section called After Dark, which was organised by Jongsuk Thomas Nam of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. Other films in the section include Late Night with the Devil by Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes, Dream Scenario by Kristoffer Borgli, and Night of the Bride by Virat Pal.
The Rapist by Aparna Sen, Dostojee by Prasun Chatterjee, and A Night of Knowing Nothing by Payal Kapadia are just a few examples of films from the 2020 and 2022 that will be screened in the Recap portion.
