Ishwak Singh on winning Best Actor Award for Berlin in SAIFF

For his role in the movie Berlin, Ishwak Singh on winning Best Actor Award for Berlin in SAIFF. The good news came in a “unexpected and mosquito-ridden moment,” as he puts it. It’s similar to the cliche that says, “Life doesn’t fail to surprise you,” which is still very true today.

Ishwak Singh says candidly, “I had a restless night, woke up in the middle of the night, hated the mosquito biting me, and was so irritated. There were multiple messages from my director saying, ‘Call me, it’s urgent,’ since he is in the US for the festival. When I called him, he informed me that the event is taking place in an hour and that I had won the award.  So, it was a surprising news in the middle of the night.’

While still processing the information, the actor recorded a brief acceptance speech that he dedicated to his director. “My director is the main reason I want to dedicate this award to him; he was a true inspiration to me.” He permits you to fly and soar.

The 34-year-old tells us about his role in Berlin, saying, “There was a lot of preparation that was only about exploration. I played a deaf character. I learned about the actual problems facing their community. The actor found that learning the complex sign language, ISL, was the most difficult task. “I wanted to be in a mindset where I could talk to everyone on the set in sign language just by instinctively. It shouldn’t appear to be something I discovered.

The recognition on an international stage left him humbled, especially among the presence of Hollywood’s elite. “It’s a big deal, and it’s amazing as there were so many huge Hollywood stars sitting there. They are aware of my work, and Atul told me that they really loved the performance and wanted to meet me. It feels great.”

“It’s sort of a gateway to more possibilities, but you can’t really put a finger on it. I didn’t know that Berlin would reach this point. In our line of work, you can never be calculative in that sense,” he says, considering the wider implications of this honour.
