Australia defeated Afghanistan in the World Cup thanks to one of the greatest individual performances in cricket history from Glenn Maxwell at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Australians were struggling at 91 for seven at one point while chasing Afghanistan’s target of 292 runs, but Glenn Maxwell’s historic double century gave them an amazing victory. At 201 off 128 balls, Maxwell was still undefeated with 10 sixes and 21 fours. Australia advanced to the semi-finals with the victory. Afghanistan’s half-hearted hopes are all but gone.
After Maxwell and captain Pat Cummins finished an incredible partnership of 202 runs off 170 balls for the eighth wicket without a break, the team won brilliantly. Cummins scored just 12 runs off 68 balls and hit just one four in this partnership.
Throughout the game, Maxwell persevered at the crease and guided the team to victory despite experiencing back and muscle aches. Because it was hard to run singles, Maxwell batted exclusively on boundaries. Out of 201 runs, Maxwell scored 144 runs through boundaries! Maxwell needed just 19 balls to score the winning run.
