Astrud Gilberto’s son Marcelo just acknowledged her death, and her granddaughter Sofia, who is also a musician, expressed her grief on Instagram. She emphasised her grandmother’s pioneering role in popularising bossa nova over the world. Sofia referred to Astrud as the global face and voice of bossa nova, emphasising her indelible imprint on the music.

Sofia said in an emotional message for her grandmother, “I love and will always love Astrud.” In most parts of the world, she was the face and voice of bossa nova. “Astrud will live on in our hearts forever.”

Who was Astrud Gilberto?

Astrud Gilberto, a Brazilian singer, was born on March 29, 1940, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Jazz was her preferred musical style. She was famous for her rendition of “The Girl from Ipanema.” During her career in the 1960s, she amassed a remarkable catalogue of 16 studio albums and two live albums.

She was the daughter of a German father and a Brazilian mother. Her father named his three daughters after German mythological goddesses Astrud, Eda, and Iduna. Astrud’s family relocated to an oceanfront villa in Rio de Janeiro when she was eight years old, where she attended the Colégio de Aplicaço.
