The filthy comedy, which Paul Weitz directed, was released on July 9, 1999. It centres on a group of high school boys who are motivated to lose their virginity before the end of their senior year, and it follows them as they engage in different sexual follies.

The ensemble cast included Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Natasha Lyonne, Tara Reid, Eugene Levy, and Jennifer Coolidge.

The R-rated Universal picture, which made more than $235 million worldwide on a $11 million budget, inspired three more films: American Pie 2 (2001), American Wedding (2003), and American Reunion (2012).
