Film Academy Announces the Winners of the Student Academy Awards

The 50th annual Student Academy Awards were revealed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday. A total of 2,443 submissions from 720 colleges and universities worldwide were used to choose the 14 winners. Film Academy Announces the Winners of the Student Academy Awards, Winners of the student prizes are qualified to compete in the animated short film, live action short film, or documentary short film categories at the ensuing Oscars.

Previous winners of the Student Academy Awards have gone on to win 12 Oscars and garner 67 nominations, including Spike Lee, Pete Docter, Patricia Cardoso, Robert Zemeckis, and Patricia Riggen.

For his film, Skin, American Film Institute’s Leo Behrens took home the Alternative/Experimental prize. Three student groups received awards for animation: Lisa Kenney from the National Film and Television School in the United Kingdom for Mum’s Spaghetti; César Luton, Achille Pasquier, and Clémence Bailly from France’s MoPA 3D Animation School for Boom; and Gabriel Augerai, Romain Augier, and Yannick Jacquin from France’s École des Nouvelles Images for Diplomatie de l’Éclipse.

Lyuwei Chen from New York University won for her documentary Duet, as did Jean Chapiro from Columbia University and Giorgio Ghiotto from NYU for their respective documentaries Hasta Encontrarlos (Till We Find Them) and Wings of Dust.

The winners of the Student Academy Awards for best narrative were Tamara Deni from Hamburg Media School in Germany for Istina (Truth), Iain Aigin Stronach Forbes from Den Norske Filmskolen in Norway for Revisited, and Mark Gerstorfer from Filmakademie Wien in Austria for Invisible Border.

On October 24, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, the young filmmakers will all take part in a ceremony when the winners’ medal placements — gold, silver, and bronze — will be declared.

Although admission to the ceremony is free and accessible to everyone, tickets must be reserved in advance and may be done so at oscars.org.
